A seat map shows how to seats are laid out. Seat & berth numbers are often not consecutive, for
example 21 & 25 are an upper & lower bed in the same 2-bed sleeper. |

To find a seat map for
your train...
Seat Guru for trains? Maybe
not yet, but on this page you'll find links to European train
seat maps, showing the layout & numbering of seats & berths
in specific types of train for the main countries in Europe.
Please report any dead links, or if you find
a new seat map.

Train formations & car numbering
You'll often find train
compositions posted in glass
cases on station platforms so that you know where to stand to
board your particular car. These show the train consist with carriage
sequence & carriage numbering for each departure from that platform.
Unfortunately, train operators don't usually put this information online,
but there are a couple of useful websites that show train formations, often with photos of what the cars look like:
-
For Austria & major international
trains in central Europe, including Nightjet, see
www.vagonweb.cz. This also has photos of the carriages and other
useful information.
-
For Germany, showing both domestic
&
international trains by train number, see
www.fernbahn.de/datenbank/suche. If
you don't know the train number you want, use the journey planner at
int.bahn.de to look it up,
clicking on the service you want in the search results to see details
including the train number.
Can I choose a specific seat?
A few
train operators let you choose a specific seat from a seat map, but usually only if you book
their own trains on their own website.
For example, such operators include
Eurostar at www.eurostar.com
(you can view & change your seats using the manage a booking link, a
best-practice as this works even if you've bought your Eurostar ticket from a
3rd party retailer), French Railways at
www.sncf-connect.com (on TGV &
Intercités, but only if you're booking 1st class), German Railways at
int.bahn.de
(only on German IC or ICE trains, not including the ones to Paris), Swedish
Railways at www.sj.se, Spanish railways at
www.renfe.com (but only for Spanish domestic
journeys and only if pay for seat selection), Italy's Trenitalia at
www.trenitalia.com and a
few others.
Only two 3rd-party retailers offer
this functionality:
www.italiarail.com
sells Trenitalia tickets and will let you choose specific seats from a seat map,
like Trenitalia themselves.
www.thetrainline.com now also lets you choose specific seats, when booking
1st class on French TGVs & Intercités and on Trenitalia high-speed & Intercity
trains in any class.
Most other booking sites only let
you choose basic options such as aisle or window, possibly table
meaning face-to-face seats across a fixed table as opposed to an airline-style
drop-down table on the seat back in front. And possibly compartment
(meaning classic side-corridor-and-compartment carriages with 6-seater
compartments) or saloon, meaning more modern open-plan seating.
Berth numbering in sleepers & couchettes often
causes confusion. People get berth numbers 21 & 25 and worry that
they're not together in the same 2-bed sleeper, when they are!
See the
generic sleeping-car numbering plan below, or search for the specific sleeper
train you're booked on in the list below, based on the country in which your
journey starts. Adjacent compartments sometimes have a communicating door when
people travelling together occupy both compartments, for example 11/13/15 will
often have a door through to 12/14/16, 21/23/25 will have a door to 22/24/26 and
so on.
Generic sleeper numbering plan.
When used as a 2-berth, only the top & bottom berth numbers are
used, for example 21 & 25.
Generic couchette numbering plan.
When used as 4-berth, usually the top & bottom berth numbers used, for example 21,
22, 25 & 26. But not always!
Saloon or compartment
seating?
Some trains have seats in
open-plan saloons, indeed most modern trains have this sort of seating in a
variety of layouts. Some trains, often older ones in central & eastern Europe,
have seats in traditional 6-seater compartments with a side corridor, these
almost always follow the standard numbering system shown below. There are sliding (non-lockable) doors to each compartment.
Sometimes you'll find both sorts of seating on one train, and some
booking systems (such as the German Railways website) will ask you which you prefer. Unless you're a group of 5 or 6
people, most travellers prefer open-plan saloons, which also gives you a
better view out as you can view diagonally through all
the coach windows, not just directly sideways through your own window.
Generic compartment car numbering plan. The first digit is the
compartment number.

Car number greater than 10? When two TGV units run coupled
